MSR Simmerlite, by Tim
I have had good experiences with the MSR Simmerlite stove, both great times in the outdoors and good food. On both an 8 day walk in the Tasmanian Western Arthurs and on snow camping trips, this stove has proved its worth.Being powerful and quick boiling, fuel weight is minimised on long trips. As the name suggests, the Simmerlite has better simmer control than some other MSR stoves. The light and simple windshield allows this stove to work well even in windy conditions, and the low profile ensures stability: you don't want to lose your dinner just as it is cooked to perfection!

This stove merges the simplicity and reliability of traditional Methylated Spirit burning stoves with the technology of the heat exchanger (as found on the Jetboil Stoves) which results in higher efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. The complete stove set is made of extremely light and durable hard anodised aluminium. Included in the set are two cooking pots (1.8 & 2.35 litre) with volume scales on the side, pot lid has a plastic handle that does not hold heat, pot grippers, two plastic plates, frying pan with multi-layer non-stick coating, brass burner and mesh carry bag. All these combine to make this a great value, safe, reliable convenient cookset, all complete weighing 1050 grams!
Summary of the advantages over other spirit burning stoves: 1: Hard anodised for durability. 2: Heat exchanger pot. If you never used one of these it works very well and is particularly important for these meth burning stoves which are otherwise intrinsinctly slower to boil. 3: Pots and frypan also have multi layer non-stick coating for easy cleaning. 4:Two plastic plates included for convenience.

The Optimus Nova+ features a quick priming, patented burner with built-in magnetic cleaning needle, with the new Powerline control valve that uses the fuel hose as an extension to the valve. Flame control is now done by simply twisting the green control at the end of the hose. This gives excellent flame control from simmer to supersonic! Average boil time for 1 L of water: 3.5 min/1 l water, depending on climate, altitude etc. Average burn time: up to 2.5 h at maximum output (using 450 ml fuel). Weight: 430 grams. Included are burner, pump, wind shield, tool, stuff bag, wear parts and lubricant. Capable of burning shellite, kerosene, diesel and av gas.

The MSR Pocket Rocket is a small light weight (85 grams) camping stove which has helped simplify and lighten my cooking setup. The stove works by threading it onto a gas canister, which are available in three different sizes to cater for long and short hikes. Canisters can be recycled using a Crunch-It tool which are also available at The Wilderness Shop. I’ve had my Pocket Rocket for five years and it has started first go every time during that period. The stove comes with a red storage case which makes it easy to find when rummaging around at the bottom of your pack. The range of flame adjustment is from a very slow simmer to a raging boil with similar ease of control to a stove top gas burner at home. Above the snowline I have found the Pocket Rocket’s performance to be the match to liquid fuel stoves when it comes to melting snow.
